Growth Form: Annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs.

Stems: Often prostrate or trailing.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Margins entire to undulate. Petiolate (usually). Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary, solitary or several in clusters. Flowers bisexual (perfect) or unisexual. Calyx of 3–4(5) sepals, connate at base. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 1 to numerous. Ovary inferior or partly superior, (1–)3–8-celled; ovules 1 per cell; styles (1–)3–8 equal in number to ovary cells.

Fruit: Fruit nut-like or drupaceous. Seeds 1–10; light brown; ± reniform; arils absent.
